The Canadian prairies have a way of looking simple from a distance, but the longer I look, the more layers I see.
Layers of Life was inspired by that openness—the fields, changing colours, enormous sky, and the marks left across the land. I wanted this piece to feel alive, so I worked with thick, expressive brushstrokes, texture, and layers of colour that allow the surface itself to become part of the landscape.
For me, the title Layers of Life speaks to more than the land. Our own lives are built in layers too—places, people, experiences, memories, and moments overlapping and becoming part of who we are.
I wanted this painting to feel bold and full of movement while still holding onto that unmistakable feeling of standing beneath a wide Canadian prairie sky.
