This piece was inspired by a photograph taken by a member of the Richard Eaton Singers during a performance of Handel’s Messiah in December 2024.
I was drawn to the view from the performers’ perspective—the musicians, the stage, the audience beyond, and the incredible space surrounding them. We so often experience a performance from our seats in the audience, but I loved seeing that relationship from the other side.
For me, this painting is about everything that comes together to create live music. The performers, musicians, audience, architecture, light, and sound all become part of one shared experience.
I wanted to capture that feeling through colour, movement, and expressive brushwork—the energy of being in the room when so many individual voices and instruments come together to create something much bigger.
It is a celebration of live performance and those fleeting moments in the arts that exist for only a short time, but somehow stay with us long after the final note.
