There is something about Jasper Lake that feels incredibly open—the water, mountains, and sky all stretching out in front of you.

This 24 × 24 inch painting was inspired by one of those moments at Jasper Lake when the sky seemed to be changing by the minute. I was drawn to the contrast between the calm water and the movement happening above it, with deep blues and stormy clouds mixing with areas of light.

I used loose, expressive brushstrokes and layers of colour to capture that movement. I wanted the mountains and shoreline to ground the painting while allowing the Alberta sky to take up the space and attention it deserved.

For me, this piece holds two feelings at once: the power of a changing mountain sky and the incredible calm that comes from standing beside the water and watching it happen.

It is a little piece of Jasper and one of those moments when nature reminds me to stop, look up, and stay awhile.
