There is something special about the few moments before a performance begins.
The Moment Before was inspired by the view from the stage at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre, just before a performance of Handel’s Messiah. I was drawn to the audience filling the seats, the incredible architecture surrounding them, and that feeling of anticipation when everyone is waiting for the first note.
We usually experience a performance looking toward the stage, so I loved seeing this familiar Edmonton space from the performers’ perspective. From there, the audience becomes part of the experience too.
For me, this painting is about that brief pause before music fills the room—the performers are ready, the audience is waiting, and something shared is about to begin.
I wanted to capture that anticipation through expressive colour, line, and movement. The Moment Before is a celebration of the Winspear, live performance, and the wonderful energy that exists when people gather together to experience the arts.
