There is something about driving an Alberta road as the sun begins to set—the prairie fields stretching out ahead, the sky changing colour, and that feeling of having nowhere else to be except on the road.
Following Close Behind was inspired by one of those drives. As I looked back, someone was following close behind, and suddenly the view became about more than the landscape. We were travelling the same road, together.
I wanted to capture the openness of the prairie, the warmth of the evening light, and that small moment of connection found in the rearview.
For me, this painting is about the people who travel alongside us. Sometimes they are sitting right beside us, and sometimes they are following close behind—but knowing they are there becomes part of the journey.
