Johnston Canyon is one of those places where the experience is as much about the journey as where the trail eventually takes you.
This painting was inspired by walking through Johnston Canyon near Banff—the towering rock walls, water rushing below, trees growing in seemingly impossible places, and the pathway carrying you deeper into the landscape.
I wanted to capture the energy and colour I feel when I am there rather than recreate every detail exactly. The movement of the water, strong lines of the canyon, and flashes of light and colour all become part of how I remember the experience.
For me, paintings like this are about holding onto a little piece of a place after we leave it. The hike eventually ends and we head home, but somehow these landscapes come home with us.
