There are certain places that seem to ask us to sit for a while.
When I Am Here was inspired by an Edmonton river valley sunset and a simple bench waiting beneath that incredible sky. I love the idea of a bench in a beautiful place—it gives us permission to stop, look, think, and simply be where we are.
Sometimes it is a place to sit alone and find a little quiet. Other times, it is somewhere to sit beside the person you need most.
For me, this painting is about both. It is about the comfort we can find in familiar places and in the people who share them with us.
