There is something about driving Alberta’s open roads that gives me time to think—about where I am going, but also about where I have been.
Rearview Prairie — Where We’ve Been was inspired by a photograph I took while travelling through Alberta. In the rearview mirror, the dusty road stretches out behind me, while beyond it are the golden fields, enormous sky, and openness of the prairie.
I created this piece using needle-felted wool, building the landscape through layers of fibre, texture, and colour. I love the softness of the wool against the imagery of the road and the sense of movement it creates.
For me, the rearview mirror has become a symbol of memory. We can look back and carry those experiences with us, but we are always still moving forward.
Where We’ve Been is about that space between the two—the road behind us, the road still ahead, and all the places and experiences that become part of who we are along the way.
