There are some places I needed to experience for myself before I could paint them. Spirit Island was one of those places.
Whispers of the Rockies was created after I made the journey to Maligne Lake on my own to finally see Spirit Island with my own eyes. I remember the incredible turquoise water, the mountains rising in the distance, and the stillness of being surrounded by a landscape that felt so much bigger than me.
I wanted to capture that quietness in this painting—the reflections on the water, the evergreens framing the island, and the mountains layered into the distance. More than anything, I wanted to hold onto how it felt to finally stand there.
Spirit Island is also a place of deep cultural significance to the Stoney Nakoda people. I approached painting this landscape with respect and gratitude, knowing that my experience as a visitor is only one small part of a place with a much deeper history and meaning.
For me, Whispers of the Rockies is about solitude, awe, gratitude, and finally experiencing a place I had wanted to see for so long.
