Maligne Canyon has always been more than simply a beautiful place to me. It is somewhere I have returned to again and again, and with every visit, more memories become attached to it.
You’re Special to Me was inspired by this incredible place in Jasper National Park—the rushing water, rugged canyon walls, towering trees, and the feeling of being surrounded by a landscape that still manages to make me stop and take it all in.
The title speaks to both the place and the people connected to it. I think certain landscapes become special because of the experiences we have there and the people we share them with. Eventually, it becomes difficult to separate the place from the memories.
For me, this painting is simply about loving a place—and everything and everyone it brings to mind.
