Part of my For the Love of the Arts series, Silver Skate: Spirit of the Flame captures one of the festival’s most unforgettable traditions—the lighting of the towering sculpture at Edmonton’s Silver Skate Festival. On a cold winter evening, people gather around the fire, drawn together by warmth, wonder, and a shared sense of celebration.

As the flames rise into the night sky, the sculpture seems to come alive. In that moment, the cold fades into the background, replaced by laughter, quiet conversation, and the simple joy of experiencing something extraordinary together. I wanted this painting to honour not only the spectacle of the fire, but the community that forms around it.
