When I walked through Jasper after the wildfire, I expected my attention to go to what had been lost. And of course, it did. The tall, blackened trunks are impossible to ignore.
But then I looked down.
There was so much life.
Grasses had returned in every shade of green and gold. Purple and pink wildflowers were growing between the burned trees, filling spaces that had once been shaded by a much denser forest. With fewer trees, sunlight was reaching places it hadn't before, and suddenly there were layers of colour everywhere I looked.
I loved that contrast—the dark, almost graphic lines of the burned trees against all that softness and colour growing underneath them.
The fire changed this landscape dramatically, but it didn't get the final word.
Life, Undeterred is about what keeps growing anyway. Not replacing what was there before or pretending the loss didn't happen, but finding its own way forward.
That was the beauty I kept noticing in Jasper this time.
