Behind the Mask holds a very specific memory for me.
I painted this view of Maligne Canyon live at the Whyte Avenue Art Walk during COVID. It was my first time painting Maligne Canyon at a live event, and I did it while wearing a mask—something that felt strange at the time but became such a recognizable part of that period in our lives.
Maligne Canyon is a place I have returned to throughout my life, so painting it while surrounded by people again, even under such unusual circumstances, felt especially meaningful.
The title Behind the Mask became about both experiences: the landscape emerging on the canvas in front of me and me, the artist, creating it from behind a mask.
This 18 × 24 inch original painting holds two pieces of my story together—a place I have loved for years and a moment in time none of us could have imagined.
